HFAC Launches New Website

HUMANE FARM ANIMAL CARE LAUNCHES NEW INTERACTIVE WEBSITE

(Herndon, VA, U.S.A., May 17, 2010) Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) announces today the launch of its new website. The site includes an interactive database which will allow consumers to easily search for retailers that carry products with its Certified Humane® label, and a “take action” section with tools to empower consumers to initiate change on behalf of farm animals through the marketplace.

HFAC is the leading non-profit certification organization improving the lives of farm animals in food production. The Certified Humane® designation assures consumers that meat, poultry, egg, or dairy products they purchase have been produced according to HFAC’s precise standards for humane farm animal treatment. Animals must receive a nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones and must be raised with shelter, resting areas and space sufficient to support natural behavior. Since the HFAC program was unveiled in May 2003, more than 60 companies, representing hundreds of farms and millions of farm animals, have been certified.

The site, www.certifiedhumane.org, contains many new features such as the Farm/Ranch/Business section which outlines the benefits of being certified, an electronic press kit, the “HFAC Happenings” blog, and a “Take Action” page that enables consumers to get involved and provides them with tools they can use to encourage retailers and restaurants to carry Certified Humane Raised and Handled® products.

Of special interest is the up-to-date searchable database that allows consumers to find Certified Humane® products in their area, by supermarket and the brand name of the Certified Humane® product sold in that supermarket.   In addition, if there are no markets nearby, consumers can find Certified Humane® producers that sell product online, through the online search, and for food service looking to purchase Certified Humane® products, for restaurants, schools and catering companies, there is a distributor search feature as well.  “We are especially excited about this feature,” said Adele Douglass, Executive Director. “Our constituents asked for an easy way to find and purchase humanely raised products in their home towns and we delivered.” The database allows visitors to type in their city, state or zip code to access a list of local retailers and producers who are part of the Humane Farm Animal Care family.

“It couldn’t be easier,” Douglass added. “Everyone can now be an advocate for farm animals by purchasing Certified Humane® products and utilizing the tools we provide on our new site to educate local supermarkets, retailers and friends and family about the program.”

Endorsed by more than 36 humane organizations, the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® program is nationally recognized as the Gold Standard for certifying animal welfare from birth through slaughter.  HFAC’s Animal Care Standards were developed by a veritable “Who¹s Who” of national and international animal scientists and farm-animal welfare experts.  Producer compliance with the HFAC standards is verified through annual on-site visits by HFAC’s third-party inspectors.
