Eight dairy farms in Maryland offer ice cream made on the premises. Two of those are right in Frederick County, and one is just across the county line in Smithsburg.

Spend an afternoon at each creamery, enjoying a cone of smooth homemade ice cream. The ice cream at these creameries is not only made on site, but it’s made with milk that comes from that same farm — so as you savor your cone, you might get to wave a thank you at the cows who made it all possible.

Milk and dairy products are Maryland’s third largest agricultural commodity, bringing in more than $188 million to the state’s farms in 2012.

These creamery farms have found a way to stay in business in an era when many dairy farms have closed. Selling homemade ice cream from locally raised cows has helped them build their businesses in an era when factory farms have become the norm.

An ice cream trail has been plotted, connecting the eight dairy farms in Maryland which serve this homemade ice cream.

If you visit all eight before Sept. 8, and get a passport stamp, you can enter to win a $50 gift certificate to the creamery of your choice. Go to http://marylandsbest.net/pdf/IceCreamTrailBrochure.pdf to download the passport and brochure.

The ice cream is sold by the scoop at the farm, or in cartons, and is one of the products the creamery delivers to 8,500 customers in Maryland, Washington, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
