For example, in conditions of extreme heat sun shades and water-cooling systems must be available to cattle. Feed must be fresh. Cattle must have sufficient room to lie down in their normal positions in a clean area.

Chicken Buyer’s Guide
Certified Humane Raised & Handled®: Overseen by a nonprofit endorsed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States, this label ensures your chicken received basic standards of care. For instance, CHRH producers must provide at least six continuous hours of darkness per 24-hour period (many birds live in round-the-clock light to hasten growth). Feed must be fresh. Original guidelines required producers to provide about 1 square foot of space per chicken; however, this is currently under review. This third-party certification does not have any rules about acess to pasture.

Greener Choices: Meat and Poultry Buyer’s Guide
Certified Humane® (beef, pork, lamb, poultry)

This label guarantees that animals have freedom to move and prohibits crates and tie-downs in stalls, as well as artificial means to induce growth, such as continuous barn lights for broiler chickens.

Eco-benefits: Certified Humane prohibits the use of antibiotics and growth hormones, two factors in groundwater pollution.

Is it regulated? Yes. Certified Humane standards are endorsed by several animal-rights organizations, including the ASPCA and the Humane Society. Producers are audited by third-party groups.

Keep in mind: This label does not mean animals are certified organic.

Pork Buyer’s Guide

Certified Humane Raised & Handled: Overseen by a nonprofit endorsed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States, this label ensures your pig received basic standards of care. CHRH pigs must have access to straw or other material to root around in, as well as objects for manipulation, such as chains or balls.

Turkey Buyer’s Guide
Certified Humane Raised & Handled: Overseen by a nonprofit endorsed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States, this label ensures your turkey received basic standards of care. For instance, CHRH producers must provide at least eight continuous hours of darkness per 24-hour period (unless a period of natural darkness is shorter). Guidelines require producers to provide 2 to 5 square feet of space per turkey, depending on their size
