PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway’s brands of cage-free and organic eggs are now Certified Humane®, according to a release from the nonprofit Humane Farm Animal Care.

“Safeway is the first major retailer in the United States to require all of their cage free and organic egg producers to become Certified Humane®,” HFAC said in a statement.

Safeway’s cage-free and organic eggs include Lucerne Cage-Free, O-Organic and Open Nature.

The retailer has been working with the nonprofit since 2008. HFAC inspects farms and plants as part of their certification program.

“Safeway’s commitment has been unique and impressive. All of their suppliers had to make the changes necessary to become certified,” said Adele Douglass, HFAC’s founder and CEO, in a statement. “As a result they have had a major impact on improving the lives of millions of laying hens in the US. Safeway’s leadership is unparalleled within the retail food industry. ”
