HERNDON, Va., Oct. 22, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Humane Farm Animal Care® (HFAC), the leading non-profit certification organization improving the lives of farm animals in food production, announced today that Bolzano Artisan Meats has achieved certification through Certified Humane® for their salami products.

Bolzano Artisan Meats, based in Milwaukee, WI, is proud of its status as the first company in Wisconsin to practice the art of dry curing, using traditional European methods. Owners Scott Buer & Christin Johnstone-Buer began making dried, fermented, and preserved meats at their home. As their “obsession” for meat processing took over, they turned their hobby into a business. The company quickly took off after its launch in 2009. By 2010, the salami had become popular enough to take over the company’s entire production. All seven types of salami made by Bolzano Artisan Meats are Certified Humane®.

Scott Buer explains, “Certified Humane® is a great way for us to have proof for ourselves and for our customers that the pork we get is from animals that are raised in a sustainable and humane way. We really like that the program is created for farmers who are doing things the right way.”

Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of farm animals by certifying their humane treatment. Supported by more than 50 humane organizations, the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® program is nationally recognized as the Gold Standard for certifying animal welfare from birth through slaughter. Since the program was unveiled in May 2003, more than 100 companies, representing thousands of farms and millions of farm animals, have been certified.

HFAC’s Animal Care Standards were developed by a veritable “Who’s Who” of national and international animal scientists and farm-animal welfare experts. Producer compliance with the HFAC standards is verified through annual on-site visits by HFAC’s third-party inspectors.
