Several new farms join Certified Humane Raised and Handled® Program

HERNDON, Va., March 9, 2016 — Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC), the leading international nonprofit certification program improving the lives of millions of farm animals in food production, announced several new farms in their Certified Humane Raised and Handled® program.

The Certified Humane® label assures consumers that the meat, poultry, egg, or dairy products they purchase have been produced according to HFAC’s precise standards for humane farm animal care. Animals must receive a nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones and must be raised with shelter, resting areas and space sufficient to support natural behaviors.

According to Adele Douglass, executive director for HFAC, the following farms have passed all of the Certified Humane® qualifications and independent, third-party inspections this year and may use the Certified Humane® label on all their products.

  • How Cow! Grass Fed beef, a 128-acre family farm in Waputo, Washington, raises Angus/Limousin cattle on cropland-planted seeded pastures, free of antibiotics, growth hormones, or pesticides.
  • Le Fort’s Organic Crop is located in Creston, California, near the city of San Luis Obispo in the Central Coast region of California. In addition to their vegetable and herb crops, the farm raises free-range chickens.
  • Gryphon Ranch, a 469-acre ranch in the Pinal Mountains in Globe, Arizona, raises purebred registered Scottish Highland cattle.

Endorsed by 66 humane organizations, the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® program is nationally recognized as the Gold Standard for certifying animal welfare from birth through slaughter. Since the HFAC program was unveiled in May 2003, more than 110 companies, representing hundreds of millions of farm animals, have been raised Certified Humane® in North and South America.
