Pacific Business News: Maui Dairy Receives Certification

The Surfing Goat Dairy, owned by Thomas and Eva Maria Kafsack, will be the first Hawaii-based producer to receive the Certified Humane Raised and Handled label on its products.

The 42-acre Kula dairy uses no growth hormones or antibiotics. It offers its approximately 35 goats shelter from the elements, automatic water so they can drink as much as they like, and spacious pastures to graze in, Thomas Kafsack told PBN.

“It is our policy to give animals that are raised for food the same conditions as animals that are raised for pets,” he said.

Virginia-based Humane Farm Animal Care recognizes food producers for their humane treatment of farm animals. The Certified Humane Raised and Handled label lets consumers know that the eggs, dairy, meat or poultry products have been produced with the welfare of the animal in mind.

Kafsack said he and his wife contacted HFAC to apply for the certification earlier this year.

In order to receive the certification, farm animals must receive a nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones and be raised with shelter, resting areas and sufficient space to support natural behaviors, HFAC said.

Compliance standards are verified through on-site visits.
More than half of the dairy’s cheeses have won national awards, Kafsack said. The dairy makes about 20 cheeses as well as soap.

Presentation of the certificate and a cheese tasting is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Indigo Restaurant in Honolulu.
