Humane Farm Animal Care announces that Firefly Farms in Connecticut becomes newest farm in the Certified Humane® program

(HERNDON, VA, USA) June 22, 2015 — Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC), the leading international non-profit certification organization improving the lives of millions of farm animals in food production, announced this week that Firefly Farms in North Stonington, Connecticut, is now a Certified Humane Raised and Handled® farm.

Founded by the Tillman-Brown Family in June of 2011, Firefly Farms is a 135-acre farm in North Stonington, Connecticut. The family farm raises chickens, pigs and cattle, who are all pasture or forest raised. The animals are allowed to forage for food (in addition to their supplemented diets) and are kept in environments natural to their species.

“Our pigs live in large groups in the woods, foraging, sleeping in piles, and enjoying the very essence of being a pig,” said Allena. “Our piglets stay with their mothers until they are naturally weaned, as do our calves. Our cows have a variety of pastures to suit their needs and the chickens have chicken tractors (movable chicken coops without floors) that are moved twice daily to give them access to fresh grass. Except for protective fences, our animals get to live natural lives.”

According to Adele Douglass, executive Director for HFAC, Firefly Farms passed all of the Certified Humane® qualifications and can now use the Certified Humane® label on their food products. The Certified Humane® label assures consumers that farm animals are raised where they can express their natural behaviors and move around freely, and without the use of antibiotics, growth hormones or animal by-products.

Endorsed by 66 humane organizations, the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® program is nationally recognized as the Gold Standard for certifying animal welfare from birth through slaughter. Producer compliance with the HFAC standards is verified through annual on-site visits by HFAC’s third-party inspectors.
