Have you heard the rumor about small peeled carrots having bleach on them right? Well according to the FDA, carrots are rinsed in (now preserved) chlorine wash to kill bacteria (like salmonella and E. coli) which cause food borne illness. Most precut produce, including frozen veggies and fruit salad, is washed with this or a similar sanitizer. In any case, its just not good. Bleach or no bleach; I would recommend buying organic produce whenever possible or grow your own. I grew my own carrots this year and they are so sweet. I recommend growing your own.

Another interesting fact is about FREE RANGE eggs. Did you know it’s still possible to not be “free range”? The USDA allows chickens to be labeled as such so long as they have outdoor access. Which could be grass or a paved yard. Also these birds might have been debeaked, a painful procedure notorious on factory farms to prevent pecking at other birds.

Instead a better choice is poultry products labeled pasture-raised or bearing the certified humane raised and handled stamp, which indicates that birds have sufficient shelter and engaged in their natural behavior. Which means they will foraging for food such as grass and grubs and these will birds will have less fat than their factory-farmed counterparts and they produce eggs that burst with vitamin A and heart-and brain-healthy omega-3’s.

One way to get by this is to find a local farmer to buy fresh egg’s from them. If you don’t know of any, start asking friends and family members. Usually someone somewhere knows of a place. This way you get to see where the chickens live, what they are fed, and you know you’re getting a fresh egg.
