The Certified Humane® label has appeared on egg cartons for several years now; it basically means that laying hens are treated a little bit better than caged battery hens. Now, though, comes word that Safeway — the country’s second-largest grocery chain — has decided to require all of its organic and cage-free egg producers to include the label.
This doesn’t mean that all of the retailer’s eggs will be Certified Humane®; as Rebekah Denn reported for the Seattle Times, “Eggs that aren’t labeled cage-free or organic aren’t included in the requirement.” For a list of all the producers and products with the CH label, check out the {cms_selflink page=’alias-4′ text=’website’} run by the nonprofit Humane Farm Animal Care.
