Lancaster, Pennsylvania December 5 2012 – Giving Nature Foods, a prominent leader in the production and distribution of cage free and organic eggs has announced the debut of a Non-GMO Project Verified egg. The new product, whose eggs come from hens that are fed feed that does not include genetically engineered grains, is the first of its kind to be marketed to prominent retailers such as Whole Foods Market.
For over twenty years, Giving Nature has been committed to the ethical development of foods and has insisted that all of its operations adhere to sustainable farming practices. Notably, in 2008, humane treatment of birds motivated the company to insist that their organic egg laying hens graze on grass. The innovative program which expands pasture access to chickens is known as “Progressive Pasture” and it continues to be implemented.
In keeping with the company’s emphasis on animal welfare and sustainability, Giving Nature has now responded to the growing concern regarding genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The release of the Non-GMO Project Verified egg coincides with the recent attention surrounding Proposition 37, the California measure that would have required labeling of genetically engineered products. On November 6, 2012, 4 million Californians went to the voting booth and demanded that their food require GMO labeling. Although the measure was ultimately defeated, the strong support of California voters and the national attention it garnered has made GMO labeling one of the food industry’s most pressing issues.
With this in mind, Giving Nature Foods is proud and excited to announce that it has earned and received the Non-GMO Project Verified Certificate of Compliance. From the farms that raise the grain for feed to the eggs placed in the carton, the new eggs meet all of the rigorous Non-GMO Project Verified compliance standards.
The eggs will initially be sold in Whole Foods Markets across the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States as well as various independent grocers in the Northeast region. The Non-GMO Project Verified eggs come in Large and Extra Large and they are both Humane Farm Animal Care Certified Humane and Kosher Certified. A full launch of the product will occur at the Natural Foods Expo West in Anaheim California from March 8-10.
