If I asked you to imagine farm animals, you might idyllically picture cows gathered in a field, chickens dusting themselves near a barn, or pigs grunting and wallowing in mud.
The good news is, that is how Certified Humane® farm animals live. But that is not how a majority of the nation’s farm animals live.
Most cattle live their entire lives in feed lots, where they never walk on or see a blade of grass. Pigs often live in gestation stalls where they can’t turn around. And most chickens are raised in battery cages where they can’t can spread their wings or get away from other chickens in the same cage.
More than 20 years ago, I discovered what life was really like for farm animals and decided to devote the next half of my life to helping them.
It took many years, but I researched humane farming practices and worked with animal welfare scientists from around the world. Together, we created the Certified Humane® Raised and Handled® standards to ensure farm animals could live better and more natural lives.
As a supporter, I know you agree this is important work. But did you know that Humane Farm Animal Care receives no grants or federal funding to conduct farm inspections?
We are a nonprofit organization that relies solely on individuals like you who understand that even farm animals destined for our table deserve to be treated humanely throughout their lives.
Your gift of $25, $35, $40 or more will help us educate more farmers, reach more consumers, and continue independent third-party inspections of farms where 9.7 million farm animals are raised under Certified Humane’s Animal Care Standards.
Your gift will go a long way towards making life better for farm animals. Thank you for your help.
With gratitude,
Adele Douglass Executive Director
P.S. Your gift today also supports our “Where to Shop” page and free mobile Certified Humane app so that you can reward Certified Humane® farmers and wholesalers by looking for their products in grocery and pet stores. Together, we can make a difference for farm animals.
