MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University’s dining halls are switching to Certified Humane® cage-free eggs.
The university says its residence hall dining halls and the Mountainlair student union have switched to cage-free eggs after students requested the change. The residence halls alone use about more than 1,000 eggs per week.
Assistant Director for Residential Dining Kathy Curtin said the change was considered due to students’ concerns about the living conditions of chickens raised in small battery cages. She said the school did a lot of research before deciding to make the switch.
Curtin said the school’s food service distributors only recently made the eggs available at a reasonable cost.
