(Herndon, VA) August 16, 2010 – Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) announces today that Vital Farms of Austin, Texas has been certified as a producer of Certified Humane Raised and Handled® eggs.
Created three years ago, Vital Farms produces pasture raised, organic eggs. Vital owns and operates their south Austin farm on Onion Creek and is also supplied by other farms in Texas and Arkansas. Their model incorporates small, independent producers, and they plan to expand into other regions across the States.
Vital Farms hens live on certified organic pastures. The hen enclosures are rotated every few days in order to provide fresh grass for the hens to eat and allow the just trodden pasture to recover. In addition to grass, the chicken’s diets are supplemented with an organic feed that includes GMO-free corn and vitamins. Herbicides, pesticides or other chemicals are not used in either the animal feed or on their pastures.
HFAC is the leading non-profit certification organization improving the lives of farm animals in food production. The Certified Humane® designation assures consumers that meat, poultry, egg, or dairy products they purchase have been produced according to HFAC’s precise standards for humane farm animal treatment. Animals must receive a nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones and must be raised with shelter, resting areas and space sufficient to support natural behavior.
