Consumers do not have to wait for passage of a Humane Farming Act to address the problems that George Will and Matthew Scully dramatically point to. They can support humane treatment of farm animals now by buying products at the supermarket and dining in restaurants that display the Certified Humane label. Introduced in May 2003, the “Certified Humane Raised and Handled” label assures consumers that a meat, poultry, egg or dairy product is produced with the animal’s welfare in mind. Animals must receive a nutritious diet free of antibiotics or hormones and must be raised with shelter, resting areas and space that are sufficient to support natural behavior. Our third-party inspectors conduct on-site inspections annually to verify compliance. To date, 31 farms, processors and restaurants have met our stringent certification guidelines, which were developed by a “Who’s Who” of national and international animal scientists and farm-animal welfare experts.
