Located on rolling green hills in eastern Illinois, Ludwig Farmstead Creamery is home to just over 100 highly pedigreed Holstein cows and a state-of-the-art custom creamery facility. Owner Dave Ludwig is a 5th generation farmer and takes pride in his animals and his employees; the farm manager was named Herdsman of the Year by the Holstein Association, and they focus on providing the best nutrition, healthcare and management for the well-being of their animals.
Because of their philosophy of stewardship for their cows, Dave says it was a natural choice to become Certified Humane®. “We strive to provide only the best environment and management for our cows. The Certified Humane® seal provides a credible third party verification that we do what we say we do and our cows have excellent welfare.”
Milk from the dairy is piped directly into the on-site creamery, where their world-renowned master cheesemaker makes a variety of European style cheeses which have won numerous awards, the most recent being Grand Champion cheese at the Illinois State Fair. The cheeses can be found at various farmer’s markets in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri, as well as in a variety of grocery stores in these states and elsewhere.
Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of farm animals by certifying their humane treatment. Supported by more than 38 humane organizations, the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® program is nationally recognized as the Gold Standard for certifying animal welfare from birth through slaughter. Since the program was unveiled in May 2003, more than 92 companies, representing thousands of farms and millions of farm animals, have been certified.
HFAC’s Animal Care Standards were developed by a veritable “Who’s Who” of national and international animal scientists and farm-animal welfare experts. Producer compliance with the HFAC standards is verified through annual on-site visits by HFAC’s third-party inspectors.
