HelioPower completes sustainable solar power array at Prather Ranch
The 285-kilowatt system may be the region’s largest solar project of its kind.
MACDOEL, Calif., Sept. 25, 2012 – One of the nation’s most sustainable cattle, hay and farming operations has enhanced its mission of environmental stewardship with the completion of a 285-kilowatt solar power system designed, coordinated and constructed by HelioPower.
An informal ceremony Tuesday marked the completion of the project at Prather Ranch, a self-sustaining agricultural operation in Macdoel that promotes responsible stewardship of the land, humane treatment of animals, and ecologically sustainable farming methods.
HelioPower engineered the project, structured its financing and helped to secure more than $441,700 in rebates for the ranch to hasten the return on investment for the project. HelioPower, a California-based energy solutions company, also oversaw construction of the project and will continue its relationship with Prather Ranch through ongoing operations and maintenance of the system.
Northern California utility Pacific Power said the Prather Ranch project may be the largest solar energy facility in their California territory. Pacific Power assisted in the project through its California Solar Incentive Program.
“With this project, we have reached a much higher level of sustainability,” said Mary Rickert, who with her husband, Jim, has been managing the ranch since the late 1970s.
The project harnesses sunlight to power the ranch’s USDA federally-inspected slaughterhouse and processing plant. “It adds another dimension to our philosophy of using natural resources to enhance the sustainability of Prather Ranch,” Rickert said. “It’s good for the environment, it’s better for the animals and the people in the communities we serve.”
Tom Millhoff, project manager for HelioPower, said the solar array of Hanwha-manufactured panels is one of many being installed by agricultural businesses throughout California.
“Energy costs are a huge expense for farm and ranching operations,” Millhoff said. “Solar power is a sustainable alternative to power from the grid, and we’ve been able to structure cash-flow positive financing for Prather Ranch and other agricultural and food processing clients: They are increasing net income immediately and sustainably with no capital investment.”
