Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC), the nonprofit independent certifier of humane farm animal treatment, today recognized Nibblers Eatery and Wine Bar in Pleasant Hill, California, for their commitment to purchasing Certified Humane Raised and Handled(R) products for their menu.
The “Certified Humane” designation assures consumers that a meat, poultry, egg or dairy product has been produced according to HFAC’s precise standards for humane farm animal treatment. Animals must receive a nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones and must be raised with shelter, resting areas and space sufficient to support natural behavior. Since the HFAC program was unveiled in May 2003, more than 65 companies, representing hundreds of farms and millions of farm animals, have been certified.
Outside of HFAC’s producer certification, the restaurant recognition program was developed to acknowledge restaurants and chefs who support the goals of Humane Farm Animal Care, and are dedicated to using “Certified Humane” products whenever they are available.
Nibblers Eatery and Wine Bar of Pleasant Hill, California, is an intimate venue, known for “sustainable small plates” and international artisan food and wine selections. The chefs at Nibblers consider the ingredients on their menu to be of the utmost importance, so they choose to purchase not only “Certified Humane products” but also organic, local and fair-trade products as well. The “Certified Humane” products currently served at Nibblers come from local producers including: eggs from Glaum Egg Ranch, beef from Meyer Natural Angus and goat cheese from Redwood Hills Farm and Creamery.
“I am a chef, but I am also a vegetarian and I find some solace in serving only meat from animals that have had good lifestyles,” says Owner/ Chef de Cuisine Daniel Clayton. “At Nibblers, we look seriously and source products that treat the earth and its creatures, well. Certified Humane is a prime example of our philosophy.”
Nibblers offers a casual dining atmosphere and a rotating, ethnic theme that allows diners to enjoy unique dishes from regions around the world every month. Additional information can be found at www.nibblerseatery.com.
HFAC’s Animal Care Standards were developed by a veritable “Who’s Who” of national and international animal scientists and farm-animal welfare experts. Producer compliance with the HFAC standards is verified through annual on-site visits by HFAC’s third-party inspectors.
HFAC is a national nonprofit organization supported by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), regional and local animal protection organizations, foundations and individuals.
