DC Central Kitchen – Thanksgiving Donations

11.18.10

DC Central Kitchen is talkin’ turkey this week. Over 10‚000 pounds of donated turkeys‚ pies‚ and sides‚ to be exact.

These generous contributions will enable DC Central Kitchen to provide 4‚500 delicious‚ home–cooked Thanksgiving meals to area shelters‚ agencies‚ and non–profits next week.

DCCK’s ovens have been roasting turkeys since November 1. “We’ve been washing, brining, and prepping turkeys all month for these meals‚” said Jerald Thomas‚ Director of Kitchen Operations.

DC Central Kitchen CEO Mike Curtin welcomes 5,000 lbs. of turkey donated by Ayrshire Farm to the Kitchen.

Ayrshire Farms‚ located in Upperville‚ Va.‚ delivered 5,000 lbs. of certified organic‚ certified humane‚ heritage breed turkeys to the Kitchen for these Thanksgiving meals. Turkeys were also donated by McKean Defense Group‚ Lockheed Martin‚ AMYX‚ Federal Schedules‚ and individuals.

Sides are being provided by the 11th Annual DCJCC’s Everything but the Turkey event. The event brings over 500 volunteers together to prepare 9‚500 servings of sweet potatoes‚ green bean casserole‚ stuffing‚ coleslaw and harvest bean salad. For dessert‚ volunteers from the Beauvoir School and Georgetown Day School are baking 450 pies.

The United Praise Youth Choir‚ led by Philip Brown‚ delivered turkeys from their church’s turkey drive for the second year in a row. The choir members will return to volunteer at DC Central Kitchen with their families the night before Thanksgiving to help prepare the meals for the big day.

Philip was humbled by the experience of delivering the Thanksgiving turkeys to DC Central Kitchen.

“You walk away with the knowledge that 4‚000 to 5‚000 people are going to get a Thanksgiving meal next week. And then it hits you – it’s just one meal. DC Central Kitchen does this every day. That many folks are hungry in this city. I’m just glad to know that we were helping in the bigger picture of things.”
