As the United States Department of Agriculture is announcing several steps to improve food safety following the discovery of mad cow disease in the United States, Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) is urging consumers to look for Certified Humane labels on beef as an added assurance of quality.

Consumers shopping for meat and eggs from animals raised under humane conditions now have more options as two new producers are receiving certification to use the “Certified Humane Raised and Handled” label.  The producers, Meyer Natural Angus and Pete and Gerry’s Eggs, mark the labels’ first national beef supplier and the first egg producer.

Prather Ranch, a 15,000-acre cattle ranch in Northern California, became the sixth producer to receive certification from Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) for its humane animal treatment.

Citing growing consumer concern over the treatment of farm animals, Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC), an independent nonprofit organization supported by a coalition of the nation’s leading animal protection organizations, today unveiled the “Certified Humane Raised & Handled” labeling and certification program.
