Chef Jamie Oliver recommended the Certified Humane® program to Sobeys after his team visited many farms and ranches on the Certified Humane® program in the US and Canada, including duBreton, which has been Certified Humane® for over ten years, and Aspen Ridge Natural Beef, which has been Certified Humane® for two years.

Humane Farm Animal Care® (HFAC), the leading non-profit certification organization improving the lives of farm animals in food production, announced today that four of their Certified Humane® producers have been chosen as the only meat suppliers to Sobeys “Better Food For All” program.

Nearly 10,000 stores in all 50 states and Canada carry products that are Certified Humane. Choosing Sustainable Products: Better food comes from better sources. Working with Jamie Oliver’s team, Sobeys has found producers who meet the requirements for the Certified Humane(®) certification. Sobeys is now the first major retailer in North America to offer Certified Humane(®) chicken,
pork and beef. The certification means that the animal was treated humanely from birth through
slaughter including a nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones, provided shelter, resting areas
and sufficient space, and the ability to engage in natural behaviours.

Certified Humane®  was started by Adele Douglass in 1998. Adele realized that legislation was slow and hard to obtain, but that a voluntary organization would be most helpful in getting companies to adhere to certain standards.  Certified Humane provides those standards, written clearly and detailed for every area of animal farming. Those interested in certification must apply for it and adhere to these standards.
