Conditions in industrial farms across the country can be disturbing, and that’s creating a growing trend among consumers.
More shoppers are now looking for meat products that are labeled as humane.
The “Certified Humane®” program is a non-profit organization working to improve the lives of farm animals.
“Whether their time is limited or not they should go to their ends peacefully and I don’t think anybody would disagree with that,” says Adele Douglass, the executive director of Humane Farm Animal Care.
To qualify for the humane certification, farmers must provide adequate shelter, enough space for the animals to move around naturally and gentle handling.
70% of consumers reportedly say they want to know where their food comes from and are willing to pay extra to ensure the animals are treated in a humane way.
Farmers raise ten billion animals for food each year, and so far, just 26 million are in the Certified Humane® program.
