Murray’s Chickens will add the “Certified Humane Raised and Handled” label to its packages starting in July, after the South Fallsburg, N.Y.-based company received approval from Humane Farm Animal Care, a national nonprofit organization based in Herndon, Va.
According to a news release issued by the organization, Murray’s is the first American poultry company certified to use the label, which was unveiled in May 2003 and is designed to assure consumers that a meat, poultry, egg or dairy product has been produced according to the organization’s standards for humane farm animal treatment.
Animals must receive a diet free of antibiotics or hormones and must be raised with shelter, resting areas and space sufficient to support natural behavior for a company to be certified to use the label. Sixteen companies are now certified to use the label.
“Our birds have spacious housing, clean air, fresh water and sanitary feeding conditions,” said Steve Gold, who oversees marketing and sales for Murray’s. “We think these conditions produce the best-tasting chickens.”
