Two East Coast Family Farms Awarded Certified Humane® Label

Humane Farm Animal Care® (HFAC), the leading non-profit certification organization improving the lives of farm animals in food production, announced today that egg producers, Alderfer Farm (Telford, PA) and Black Eagle Farm (Piney River, VA) have been awarded the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® label.

Established in 1978, Alderfer Farm is a fifth generation family farm that recently decided to undergo the rigorous third-party approval process. “Proper treatment of our chickens has always been a priority at Alderfer Farms,” said Mike Alderfer. “We chose to certify with HFAC because we knew our customers would be confident in the quality of our eggs and the humane treatment of our chickens when they saw the logo on our box.”

Black Eagle Farm is a traditional family farm with a long history of treating animals and the environment with respect. The decision to pursue a Certified Humane designation for its Piney River Organics™ brand was motivated by a respect for HFAC’s commitment to improving the lives of farm animals through a consumer targeted approach. “We have always raised and handled our livestock humanely, but we wanted third party verification through Humane Farm Animal Care to assure our customers that what we claim is true,” said Ralph Glatt, Black Eagle Farm. “Customers are bound to be confused by all the different brands on the market and we hope that by seeing the Certified Humane logo on our brand they’ll know they’re getting a quality product.”

Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of farm animals by certifying their humane treatment. Supported by more than 33 humane organizations, the Certified Humane Raised and Handled®  program is nationally recognized as the Gold Standard for certifying animal welfare from birth through slaughter. Since the program was unveiled in May 2003, more than 65 companies, representing hundreds of farms and millions of farm animals, have been certified.

HFAC’s Animal Care Standards were developed by a veritable “Who’s Who” of inational and international animal scientists and farm-animal welfare experts. Producer compliance with the HFAC standards is verified through annual on-site visits by HFAC’s third-party inspectors.
