South Mountain Creamery Eggs now Certified Humane®

Randy and Karen Sowers built their laying hen operation from the ground up, starting with building the barn in 2010, and received their first flock of laying hens in early 2011.  They constructed the facilities using the Certified Humane® Animal Care Standards for Laying Hens as their guidelines.  “The Certified Humane® label is the gold standard for animal welfare, and we wanted to be sure that we were raising our birds to meet those standards,” says Randy. “We are very proud and excited to be new members of the Certified Humane® program.”

Sowers Poultry sells their eggs through Randy and Karen’s company, South Mountain Creamery.  They also operate a home delivery service, so customers can order their Certified Humane® eggs and have them delivered directly to their door.

Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of farm animals by certifying their humane treatment.  Supported by more than 38 humane organizations, the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® program is nationally recognized as the Gold Standard for certifying animal welfare from birth through slaughter.  Since the program was unveiled in May 2003, more than 85 companies, representing thousands of farms and millions of farm animals, have been certified.

HFAC’s Animal Care Standards were developed by a veritable “Who’s Who” of national and international animal scientists and farm-animal welfare experts. Producer compliance with the HFAC standards is verified through annual on-site visits by HFAC’s third-party inspectors.
