Humane Farm Animal Care Certifies New Distributor

(Herndon, VA) November 11, 2010 – Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) announced today that EcoFriendly Foods of Moneta, Virginia is officially certified as distributors of Certified Humane Raised and Handled® beef, pork and goat.

EcoFriendly Foods supplies pasture-raised, organic meats to consumers and top-tier restaurants in the Washington, D.C. and New York City areas.  Foods are also available to home buying clubs in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina, and may also be purchased at regional farmers markets.

All animals are raised humanely on small family farms in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and in North Carolina.  EcoFriendly assists these farms with marketing and distribution of their products. This model promotes humane and ethical standards for grass-based farming for smaller producers that may not have the internal structure to widely deliver and advertise their products.

“We welcome EcoFriendly Foods as our newest Certified Humane® organization,” said Adele Douglass, executive director of Humane Farm Animal Care. “The company and its staff are dedicated to optimal animal welfare practices.  Owners Bev and Janelle Eggleston are true heroes in what they have done for small farmers in Virginia.”

HFAC is the leading non-profit certification organization improving the lives of farm animals in food production. The Certified Humane® designation assures consumers that meat, poultry, egg, or dairy products they purchase have been produced according to HFAC’s precise standards for humane farm animal treatment. Animals must receive a nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones and must be raised with shelter, resting areas and space sufficient to support natural behavior. Since the HFAC program was unveiled in May 2003, more than 60 companies, representing hundreds of farms and millions of farm animals, have been certified.

Endorsed by more than 36 humane organizations, the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® program is nationally recognized as the Gold Standard for certifying animal welfare from birth through slaughter.  HFAC’s Animal Care Standards were developed by a veritable “Who¹s Who” of national and international animal scientists and farm-animal welfare experts.  Producer compliance with the HFAC standards is verified through annual on-site visits by HFAC’s third-party inspectors.

EcoFriendly meats can be found at restaurants in the Washington, DC and New York City areas and at farmers markets around the region. For more information about EcoFriendly products as well as where to purchase them please visit www.ecofriendly.com or www.certifiedhumane.org.
