(HERNDON, VA, USA) – October 5, 2015 – Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving on October 12. While turkey dinners are part of the Canadian Thanksgiving tradition, buying a Certified Humane® turkey is something that consumers have only been able to do in Canada during this past decade.
Certified Humane® turkeys are raised under Humane Farm Animal Care’s (HFAC) Animal Care Standards for the humane treatment of farm animals. Turkeys must be raised on farms where they can express natural behaviors, such as flapping their wings, moving around freely, and perching above ground at night. And, they must be fed grain-free diets and raised without preventive antibiotics.
“Consumers really care about how farm animals are raised,”” says Adele Douglass, Executive Director for HFAC. “In just a little over a decade, we’ve seen a massive shift in consumer demand for more humanely-raised food. We wish all Canadians a very happy Thanksgiving and hope they will purchase Certified Humane® turkeys at Sobeys.”
Sobey’s Inc. carries Sunrise Farms Certified Humane® Frozen Young Turkeys through their “Better Food for All” program. Sobeys is the only major grocery store chain in North America that requires all the Beef, Pork, Chicken and Turkey in the “Better Food For All” program be Certified Humane® at their 1,500 stores across Canada.
Douglass says HFAC’s mission is to end factory farming by creating consumer demand for humanely-raised products. Farms in the Certified Humane® program are independently audited annually to ensure compliance with HFAC’s Animal Care standards.
Since HFAC launched in May 2003, more than 110 companies, representing thousands of farms and 96.7 million farm animals, have been Certified Humane® through the program.
