JBS has worked diligently to develop a brand in Aspen Ridge that features unique attributes that truly differentiate it in the marketplace. “Our commitment as a company is to set the bar for stewardship of our animals and the land we use for their production,” says Cody Schadegg, program manager for Aspen Ridge. Aspen Ridge consists of many different farms and ranches – some are new ranchers just starting out, and some are from families that have been in the cattle business for 5 or more generations – but all of them must meet the company’s strict requirements, a major part of which is raising their cattle under the HFAC’s Animal Care Standards for Beef Cattle. To make sure they did everything right, they had their cattle handling facilities designed to meet the recommendations of Dr. Temple Grandin, the renowned animal behavior and welfare expert and a member of the HFAC scientific committee.
“Consumers continue to become more educated and inquisitive about the types of cattle, where they are raised, what they are fed, and most importantly, how they are being handled,” said Mr. Schadegg. “Animal welfare is a priority for our company and the Certified Humane® certification fits in perfectly with our values as a company and gives our customers the assurance that Aspen Ridge’s products meet the highest animal welfare standards.”
Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of farm animals by certifying their humane treatment. Supported by more than 38 humane organizations, the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® program is nationally recognized as the Gold Standard for certifying animal welfare from birth through slaughter. Since the program was unveiled in May 2003, more than 85 companies, representing thousands of farms and millions of farm animals, have been certified.
HFAC’s Animal Care Standards were developed by a veritable “Who’s Who” of national and international animal scientists and farm-animal welfare experts. Producer compliance with the HFAC standards is verified through annual on-site visits by HFAC’s third-party inspectors.
