Adele Douglass Jolley, founder and chief executive officer

Adele Douglass Jolley, founder and chief executive officer

Founder of Humane Farm Animal Care

In 2003, Adele Douglass Jolley set out to single-handedly change the farming industry. The nonprofit she created now operates Certified Humane® globally, ensuring that more than 500 million farm animals are cared for under scientifically humane conditions.

Adele was a single mother of three without a college degree when she became the office manager and legislative assistant for then U.S. Representative Bill Green. Within his office, she began advocating for animal welfare issues, which paved the way for the American Humane Association to hire her as director of its new Washington D.C. office in 1987.

As part of her research for a committee updating rules for farm animals, Adele enlisted women animal scientists to answer her questions. They invited her to tour some farms, including a large chicken operation that kept its birds so close together that they couldn’t move around.

That was when Adele — who was born and raised in New York City — first saw how farm animals were being treated. She still remembers the birds screeching in distress as mechanical devices slammed them into cages on the way to the slaughterhouse. It didn’t matter if their wings broke, she was told, since the wings were being sold in pieces.

“I was appalled,” Adele said. “I thought, ‘If people had any idea how their food was really produced, they wouldn’t buy it.’”

When her lobbying efforts in Washington D.C. didn’t make the difference she hoped, Adele decided to strike out on her own. Armed with her own tenacity and backed by the women animal scientists who also wanted to see change in the food production industry, Adele built the foundations of what would become the Certified Humane® Raised and Handled program.

Her accolades include:

She’s now retired as CEO of the nonprofit she created. Read more about Adele’s story.
