Certified Humane Raised and Handled (CHRH) is a food label ensuring that an animal-based product has been raised in accordance with the Humane Farm Animal Care program standards. The Humane Farm Animal Care program is a non-profit third party auditor that sets standards for humane livestock production, conducts annual farm inspections and certifies the end product as humanely raised and handled. These standards dictate that animals are provided with sufficient shelter, resting areas, space to engage in natural behaviors and a nutritious diet free of hormones and antibiotics from birth to slaughter while complying with environmental standards. Antibiotics may be used in individual animals to treat illness, but not to promote growth or production.

The Executive Director of Humane Farm Animal Care, Adele Douglass, developed the certification program built on the idea that no force can drive change for more humane animal husbandry standards like consumer demand. CHRH gives farmers the opportunity to appeal to this growing sector of the market. The first audits were performed in May 2003. As of 2012, over thirty-two million of the approximately 10 billion livestock animals in the United States were certified CHRH. Consumers can search the Certified Humane website for specific products bearing the CHRH label as well as vendors in their area. The program is endorsed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society of the United States, and over thirty other humane organizations.
