Lamb and Beef Producers Newly Certified for Humane Animal Handling

Jamison Farms, a supplier of fresh lamb to many of the nation’s finest restaurants, and Big Sky Ranch, a producer of natural Certified Hereford beef, have joined the ranks of companies approved by Humane Farm Animal Care to bear its “Certified Humane Raised and Handled” label.

More than 20 North American companies are now certified to use the label, which informs consumers that a producer’s animals are raised humanely. The label was unveiled in 2003.

Companies seeking certification must undergo a rigorous on-site inspection by HFAC veterinarians and animal scientists. Among other criteria, producers must ensure that animals receive a nutritious diet free of antibiotics and hormones. They also must provide animals with shelter, resting areas and sufficient space to support natural behavior.

Jamison Farms, a 210-acre operation located in the Appalachian foothills of Latrobe, Pa., produces 5,000 lambs annually. Big Sky Ranch in Sullivan, Wis., raises Hereford cattle on pastures.
