It is no secret that the food industry engages in some pretty gruesome practices. Beef cattle, standing up to their bellies in their own waste, can’t lie down or move due to the practice of bunching the cattle into tight stalls a few weeks before slaughter. They are forced-fed corn, a grain they do not eat on their own, to fatten them for greater profit.

Because the conditions are so filthy, the cattle are given shots of antibiotics to keep them from getting sick. Growth hormones are given for maximum profit. These animals have never known anything but torture and misery.

While it is necessary to kill food animals to feed the world’s population, there is no reason for these animals to live their entire lives in an unnatural state. Dairy cows endure another form of torture and chickens are forced to live in filth from birth to death. The deplorable conditions under which these animals live necessitate the antibiotics which leads to antibiotic-resistant germs in humans.

They have created a program called Certified Humane Raised and Handled. Before producers can receive this label, they must meet the standards set by the program, including no growth hormones or antibiotics. The animals must get clean and nutritious feed and water and must be comfortable.
