Cannon Hill Farm, Mount Jackson, VA

Cannon Hill Farm is a biologically diverse, certified organic and Certified Humane® beef farm that has been continuously farmed by the Scothern family for over a century. The farm is located just west of Interstate 81, Exit 273, Mount Jackson, Virginia. Cannon Hill Farm has been operated by Gary and Martha Scothern Lantz since 1993. It has been certified organic since 2004 and Certified Humane® since 2010.

On Virginia’s short list of farms that has control of its animals from conception to consumption, Cannon Hill Farm is a “closed operation” in that it produces all nutrient-dense, non-GMO feeds required to raise and finish its animals. The farm specializes in raising the heritage breed, Belted Galloway (aka “Belties”), a traditional Scottish breed of cattle, as well as Angus and Hereford. Beltie beef is fine-grained and well-marbled with tenderness, texture and flavor that consumers expect in high quality beef. Studies have shown that Belted Galloway beef is higher in protein, calcium and niacin, and lower in calories, fat and cholesterol. Gary’s famous saying is: “Feed the soil and the soil feeds the plants, which then feed the animals.” All cattle have free access to barns year-round and there is available shelter for the entire herd.

Cannon Hill Farm is a sustainable farming operation where everything cycles as it should and is a prime example of regenerative agriculture. In 2015, the farm was recognized with Shenandoah County’s Outstanding Conservation Farm Award for its sustainable practices and conservation methods which protect the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
