(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Spring is the season of new growth and life, which is why April has been unofficially named Earth Month. I think that spring is a great time to increase the focus of our health, and to celebrate the local foods that spring brings. If you’ve been reading my tips for some time, seasonal eating is not new. What do I mean by seasonal eating? I am referring to the type of eating that we’re likely to do during each season, because each one brings with it its own eating triggers. For instance, summer brings lots of outdoor activities, lots of barbeques, and drinking (Let’s not even mention the holiday season!). But, unlike other seasons where we focus on reducing our calories, this season let’s focus on increasing our consumption of local foods, organic foods, and fresh produce!

When I think of spring, I think of being outdoors, gardening, getting in shape, and this year I am thinking about our earth, our health and going green. Many of us restart our exercise programs, and start new diets as well looking toward the summer ahead. I think seasonal eating, or shall I say “spring eating”, can help us to accomplish all of these and more. Okay, so here are my suggestions for this spring.

This Spring

…Let’s go Organic. 100% Organic foods do not contain the very chemicals that may be harmful to our health and our earth. They are not mass produced, hence the chickens, and cattle for instance, are not feed hormones, and antibiotics. Nor are they feeding on land that has been pesticide treated. Organic foods also do not contain artificial flavors and colors. While most of us are unlikely to eat organic foods all the time, we can try to do so more often, especially when we choose our fresh fruit, produce, and meats. Even fish can be “farm-raised” and not completely natural. Let’s look for organic lean meats free of hormones, and wild fish such as salmon more often. Of course as an animal lover, I would also like to suggest we look for Certified Humane® products as well. Here is a link http://www.certifiedhumane.org/ to learn more….
