App Review: AWA Labels and Certified Humane®

Posted on December 18th, 2013 by larissa in Blog

For those of you who are on-the-go smartphone users, you might be interested to learn of two very helpful apps. In this week’s blog post, I am reviewing the AWA Labels app and HFAC’s Certified Humane® app (as downloaded on Google Play for an Android smartphone). Both are available free of charge for Android phones and iPhones. By way of background, Animal Welfare Approved and Certified Humane® are some of the best animal welfare labels you can find in American grocery stores.

AWA logo

Animal Welfare Approved (AWA) is a program of the Animal Welfare Institute and a food label for meat and dairy products that come from farm animals meeting stringent animal welfare and environmental standards. The AWA standards prioritize the well-being of animals, and the sustainability of humane family farms.

Certified Humane logo

Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC)is an organization that oversees the Certified Humane® label, which ensures a nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones, animals raised with shelter, resting areas, sufficient space and the ability to engage in natural behaviors.

FACT believes that both of these labels are good choices for conscious eaters looking to purchase humanely at the grocery store. If you would like to find AWA products, the best way to do so is to use their online product locator. They currently do not have a mobile app for locating their products that I could see.

The apps:

HFAC has created a mobile app entitled Certified Humane® that allows you to search for stores in your area that sell Certified Humane® products. While I had a little trouble at first navigating the map view, I was able to successfully conduct searches in Asheville, Pittsburgh, and Chicago. I uncovered a variety of stores that carried their products, and could also view the complete list of products that any given store had on hand. Even more helpful, once you find a store, you are presented with options such as calling the store directly and getting directions to the store. All in all, this seems to be a useful app that could help people on-the-go find Certified Humane® products and stores that carry them. Recommended for humane shoppers!

The AWA Labels app does not help you find AWA products in stores near you. What it does do, however, is allow you to enter food labels you might see in the store on animal products and receive AWA’s analysis of those labels. Considering the bewildering jungle of labels in your average grocery store, this app is very useful and depends on the rigorous background research that AWA conducted on over 80 commonly seen food labels. For a person who is new to food labels and trying to eat more consciously, this app would be a great educational tool in the grocery store or at home. I found this app easy to use and to understand, and would recommend it!
